Passion

A few weeks ago, I asked all of you what you wanted to hear about, and the topic of passion came up. Specifically, finding passion again. I’ve spent time mulling the topic and have decided a few things.

First, I am by no means an expert.

Second, this is definitely something worth talking about.

Third, this might take more than one post.

So let’s start with what the heck passion is. For the sake of this conversation, we’re going to focus in individual passion; things that you are personally passionate about. These can be activities, causes, hobbies, actions, etc. We’re not talking passion for another person. 😉

Before we talk about finding passion again, let’s start with figuring out what you consider to be your passions. What lights you up in this world? Some people know the answer to this question right away – hooray for you! You know what the thing is! For others, the process can be a bit more murky. Sometimes, when I find myself unsure in this area, it’s easier to start with what I’m NOT passionate about.

A short, entirely non-inclusive list:

  • Fishing
  • Macrame
  • Accounting
  • Civil engineering
  • Minecraft

Once you’ve got some sort of idea of what you might be passionate about, it’s important to separate things that you care about from things that you will be taking action on. Here’s why: There is only so much of you to go around! I care about a wide variety of issues that range from social to political to economic. If I were to try and apply myself to every issue, I would be a hot mess in a hot minute. There are for-reals limits to my time, energy, and bandwidth, and when I ignore those limitations, everything around me suffers.

Does this mean that I then have to eliminate things that I’m care about to find my passion? Heck no! BUT I do have to narrow the field of what I care about, to discover the passion I will focus my time and energy towards.

I can do anything I set my mind to, just not all at the same time.

Okay, so now that we’ve found what we care about, and sifted out what stirs our passion, we’ve arrived, right?

Nope.

For now, let’s sit a minute with your passion, say hello, and see what comes of it. Then we’ll go from here.
